General Web design resources

Web Style Guide: Basic Design Principles for Creating Web Sites, by Patrick J. Lynch and Sarah Horton. A unique resource that "combines traditional editorial approaches to documents with graphic design, user interface design, information design, and the technical authoring skills required to optimize the HTML code, graphics, and text within Web pages." Available both as a softcover book and online at http://info.med.yale.edu/caim/manual/intro/introduction.html

Jakob Nielsen is the preeminent authority on making information accessible through usable Web sites. His own Web site, useit.com, is updated regularly with guidelines and user surveys. His book, Designing Web Usability, is a must-read for any Web site manager or developer.

Lynda Weinman http://www.lynda.com/. A great site for good advice that's appropriate for nondesigners. I'd highly recommend any of her books, too.

Writing for the Web

Presenting textual material on the Web involves very different stylistic and organizational considerations than we're used to using in print. This rich site provides excellent advice and a number of tools.
